A Guide to Private Number Plates

Have you always wanted a private number plate but never bitten the bullet and ordered one? Whether you are worried about the cost, don’t know where to get one or you want to know how fast yours will arrive, the below guide will tell you everything you need to know about private number plates.

What is a private number plate?

A private number plate, also a cherished number plate, is a type of number plate that allows you to personalize your vehicle. Unlike standard number plates that are issued by the DVLA, a private number plate enables you to choose your own numbers and letters on the registration.

Where can I get a private number plate from?

There are several places that you can go to get a private number plate for your vehicle, including:

The DVLA

The first place to look for a private number plate is the DVLA, which currently has more than 45 million registrations to buy. All you need to do is visit the DVLA website, enter your search criteria and browse all the relevant plates.

It is worth knowing that the DVA also holds number plate auctions throughout the year, where you can grab some great bargains.

A broker or specialist company

You can find dealers online that buy and sell private number plates, and these are a good place to go if you cannot find the plate you want at the DVLA. Plus, there are various companies that offer private number plate services as well. Getting a DVLA private plate via a company that specialises in these is also ideal for those who want extra services on top as well as benefit from the expertise these professionals have in the industry.

Via a private seller

There are also lots of people who sell cherished number plates privately, and these can be found on social media and in classified ads in car magazines. In some cases, though, these can be a bit more expensive than other options.

How much does a private number plate cost?

The cost of a private number plate can vary greatly depending on where you buy one from and how many characters you want your number plate to feature. You can typically pick up a private number plate for as little as £250, but if you choose to buy one privately, this can be more expensive.

Once you have purchased a private number plate, the DVLA will send you a certificate of entitlement, which allows you to place the plate on your vehicle.

You will not receive your actual number plate in the post, so you need to take proof of your identity as well as the V750 certificate to your nearest plate supplier, who will then make the plate for you and fit it to your vehicle.

In order to be legal, a private number plate must:

  • Be made from reflective material
  • Display black characters on a white background for the front plate
  • Display black characters on a yellow background for the back plate
  • Not have a background pattern
  • Not have an altered font or spacing
  • Not make your car appear newer than it is
